Q: What is AcademicPub?

A: AcademicPub, a product of SharedBook Inc., is a technology service for higher education that allows faculty and school administrators to create custom course materials from a variety of sources and present content in print or digital formats.

Q: Where can I learn more about AcademicPub?

A: Learn more by becoming an introductory user at www.academicpub.com.

Q: How are custom books created?

A:Quite simply, an educator logs into AcademicPub and creates a custom book in real-time. You may choose to send the digital output to your campus reprographics center or have AcademicPub provide copies that are shipped to your bookstore or another location of your institution's choice. AcademicPub has different billing options if your institution prefers to submit a purchase order rather than having students pay for course material directly.

Q: Who do we contact at AcademicPub to create custom books?

A: You log onto our web site and establish an account to create a custom book. Of course, you may speak with an AcademicPub representative for more information.

Q: Can faculty add their own materials to a custom book?

A: Yes, they may add their own teaching materials.

Q: Once my materials have been turned in, what happens next?

A: Materials are not turned in, in the traditional sense, to AcademicPub since our service operates in real-time and you are able to select content and upload your own materials. The user builds the custom book in real time adding content as that fits the needs of the course. You see a running price as items are added to the custom book. Once everything is added you tell the system you are done and are presented with a final price and review file.

Q: If I use the same materials next semester do I have to do the same thing again?

A: No. Simply access your account and make any required modifications to your existing custom book.

Q: When I update existing course materials will it automatically appear in my old (existing) books?

A: No, you issue a new link for new books for upcoming courses. It is impossible to update an already printed book or an already downloaded PDF. Of course, you may create a new book at any time with updated materials.

Q: Can I make a change to an existing book and get credit for previously paid royalties?

A: If you want to add material to an existing book that already includes royalty charges, it is easier to issue a supplement to avoid double payment as well as confusion for students.

Q: What content types can be included in AcademicPub custom books?

A: You may include different types of content that can be digitally uploaded into the AcademicPub system. File types include PDF, Word, and web content such as articles and lectures. Both video and audio can be linked to and opened in the digital format of AcademicPub - a new browser window is launched to present this content.

Q: Does AcademicPub have a content library or pre-cleared materials?

A: Yes, we have our own library of cleared content and work with an ever-expanding group of publishing partners that currently include research articles from MIT Sloan Management Review, business cases from Darden Business Publishing and Ivey Publishing, workplace-related content from Barrett-Koehler, math content from Content on Demand, and science content from CABI. We work with Copyright Clearance Center and can provide clearance and permissions for everything in their database.

Q: Are your custom books interactive?

A: You may include different types of content that can be digitally uploaded into the AcademicPub system. File types include PDF, Word, JPEG, and web content (html). Multimedia content (video, audio) can be referenced in the text content. When linked, it will open in a new browser window.

Q: Can faculty use readings other than the ones in your library?

Yes, you can import content that has been cleared for use in your custom book.

Q: Do you have a listing of the publishers' content in your library?

A: Yes, this listing is constantly growing as we recruit more publishing partners.

Q: What copyright services does AcademicPub provide?

A: AcademicPub dynamically clears content in real-time by checking the database at Copyright Clearance Center (CCC) to obtain permissions. If your college already has an institution-wide agreement with CCC, or has already cleared the content that you are using, please indicate this when you add content to your custom book. AcademicPub has its own library of cleared content and access to public domain resources in addition to content that can be cleared through CCC.

Q: How long does AcademicPub's royalty processing take?

A: It happens in real-time so this step is completed while you are building your custom content.

Q: What are my options if my selected content cannot be cleared by Copyright Clearance Center?

A: There are three options available:

  • You may select alternate content from our library or another source
  • You may contact the publisher and obtain copyright clearance yourself
  • You may contact customer service for help

Q: How long does manual clearance support take?

A: This can vary depending upon the copyright holder or publisher.

Q: Are you able to clear photographic images?

A: Content and photo permissions are completely separate from each other. We have chosen not to handle photo permissions since these are often prohibitively expensive.

Q: We already work with some digital aggregators and clearinghouses. Why should we want to work with you?

A: AcademicPub can provide content in digital or print formats on fast turnaround for your courses at attractive prices and through a variety of distribution means. Also, we provide you with the ability to add both your own content and content from the Web to your custom book.

Q: Do you offer digital custom books or print copies? Or both?

A: Print, digital or both depending upon your needs. We offer all of these to provide you, your students, and institution with maximum flexibility to meet your educational objectives.

Q: Do you offer iPad or eReader formats?

A: AcademicPub's digital output is compatible with an array of popular devices including the iPad, Nook, and Android-based devices.

Q: How long does it take to receive email notification of the eBook?

A: Typically it takes minutes depending on the size of the file.

Q: Is there a limit to eBook file size?

A: No, but your students must have enough available memory on their devices.

Q: Do you offer branded cover options? For the school? For the course?

A: Yes, you can create a cover for your custom book by uploading your school logo, name, etc. If you would like to create a branded AcademicPub site for your school, with custom designed covers, please contact bizdev@sharedbook.com.

Q: Do you sell through the campus bookstore or direct to the students? Or both?

A: Whatever best suits your situation. We can arrange for institutional sales too if your students do not purchase instructional materials directly from the bookstore.

Q: What is Digital Rights Management (DRM)?

A:DRM protects copyright holders and assures that permissions have been granted for use of specific content.

Q: Why does AcademicPub require DRM for some content and not for other content?

A: Some content is in the public domain or freely available and does not require paid permissions fees. However, this is not the case with most content used in custom books today.
